Are We Not Horses?
So it’s Monday, and a great one because it’s a PA day. But it’s even greater because it’s Random Playlist Monday.
- Sleigh Ride – KT Tunstall (we’re starting off in a Christmasy way today, works for me
) - Painting By Chagall – The Weepies
- Black Bird – The Beatles
- All The Way Down – Glen Hansard (this is quite the quiet playlist so far)
- Mick’s Blessings – The Style Council
- I Hope That I Don’t Fall In Love With You – Tom Waits
- Shout Bama Lama – The Detroit Cobras (quiets over, but that’s okay ’cause it’s a great song)
- Rain – Hawksley Workman
- Bongo Bong – Manu Chao
- I am an Excellent Steal Horse – Rock Plaza Central
So, that may have been one of my favourite playlists so far. Even with the Christmas song. Of all these great songs I think I’m going to have to go for Rock Plaza Central. You know the saying. When in doubt go for the crazy shouty, indie rock band.
So before going any further I need to say – although I am a huge fan now – I wasn’t always. All discovery credit goes to my dad. Although, even though I can’t quite believe it, I didn’t always appreciate the…specialness (?) of them. It is a bit of an aquired taste. Once you get past the initial phase and enter into the realm of their true greatness your world is opened up and there is so many more options. I think I really fell in love with them after I saw them at Hillside. The lead singer brought his daughter on stage, and it was love from there on in.
My dad discovered them after they released their first CD Are We Not Horses, a crazy mix of songs all related to..you guessed it, horses. I must say I’m not as well aquanted with their newer CD’s, especially their newest At The Moment of our Most Needing. If you’re looking for an intro to them I’d try checking out Anthem for the Already Defeated (love it’s name), and I am an Excellent Steel Horse. Below is the video for I am an Excellent Steel Horse in all it’s horsey glory.
I think it’s an interesting video, with a really simple idea. But somehow it works, maybe because the song isn’t simple. Either way it’s a great video and a fantastic song. For now though, I must be off, enjoy the rest of your rainy gloomy night.
I Love You
Alright, so it’s Monday and it’s been quite a long time since I last wrote. Plus, today is extra special because…are you ready for it? This is my 100th post!! WOO-HOO! - Hannah – Freelance
- Whales – Personal Stars
- This Feeling — Danny Michel (just in time)
- Relax – Frankie Goes to Hollywood (a terrible song! Yet so very good)
- Brainy – The National
So, that was quite the list. There were some really good things on there, and a few questionable ones. Now is the appropriate time to laugh at that list. I must admit I’m slightly embarrassed by it, especially the Frankie Goes to Hollywood, but oh well I guess. Of course, there was an extremely large amount of Danny, Tom and Hawksley, but there always is. Today though out of all those songs I’m going to go for Michael Franti, because we all need a music pick-me-up every once and a while, and a little reggae never hurt anyone.
I first discovered Michael Franti through his Obama Song. I was really into Obama and all he stood for (and still am) and the song just seemed really cool to me, it also proved to me that I can like hip-hop/rap/reggae music (other than Bob Marley). After the intial discovery I went in and found a few more of his songs. I especially fell in love with Say Hey (I Love You). Sure it’s a little cheesy, but it’s a damn good cheesiness. And there’s just some kind of appeal to Michael Franti, I’m not entirely sure what it is, but he has that “thing”. This song just always makes me especially happy, and it can give you a good outlook on the world, this is especially shown in the video. The video for Say Hey (I Love You) has just made it up pretty high on my list of top videos. It’s pretty fantastic and incredible cute, see for yourself.
I love this video, I especially love that it’s real people and his background looks real, not Hollywood perfect. I think that’s what makes the song not come across totally fake and cheesy. It has a certain real-ness to it not expressed in most things. I really love that the people look like real people of different sizes, cultures, and are allowed to show real emotions. It’s a pretty darn cute video, and I think it can even make all you cynics out there smile (it achieved that for me, and I’m about as cynical as it gets). So, please smile away for the rest night, and if you’re like me you’re going to watch this video about a million times more. For now though I’m out, thanks for putting up with me for this long, it’s greatly appreciated, and feel free to continue, that would also be greatly appreciated.
P.S. Feel free to get up and dance a bit to, it may actually be a requirement. Awkward dancing especially.
A Double Dose of Monday
It’s Monday! And this Monday I’m actually going to do my Random Playlist. Now I think I’m going to do 20 songs this week just for the fun of it (and to catch up a bit). So sit back relax and enjoy, I have a feeling today is going to be a good one.
1. Anywhere I Lay My Head – Tom Waits (there’s always Tom Waits, and this happens to be my dads funeral song)
2. Let My Love Open The Door – Pete Townsend (old school)
3. Somebody Got Murdered – The Clash
4. Sh0t In The Back Of The Head – Moby (this is quite the playlist so far)
5. I’ve Just Seen A Face – Across The Universe Version (and a great version at that, if you haven’t see that movie, go do it, NOW!)
6. Thunder In The Mountain – Danny Michel (always Danny as well, now all we need is Hawksley)
7. (Bit Part) – The Wooden Sky (this is one of my new favourites, it’s fantastic)
8. Atlantis! – Shane Koyczan (this is a great one, not quite as sad)
9. Action/Reaction – Choir Of Young Believers
10. Old Bloody Orange – Hawksley Workman (and there’s the Hawksley, with quite the lovely title)
11. Too Many Nights – Matt Giraud
12. Hello Goodbye – The Beatles (this is one of my favourite Beatle songs)
13. Sweet Medicine – Jason Castro
14. Please Call Me, Baby – Tom Waits (more Tom. I think this is the song where I finally start to fall asleep on Heart of Saturday Night)
15. Airplanes – Local Natives (I’ve been really loving this song lately)
16. Dashboard – Modest Mouse (this is a classic. One of my favourite Modest Mouse songs)
17. Tickle Me Pink – Johnny Flynn
18. What Katie Did – The Libertines (I loved this song and this band when I was little. It’s really to bad they broke up so early)
19. Sweater Song – Hedley
20. Kids – MGMT (you just can’t help but love this song. Even my mom likes it)
So after perusing all the songs on this list (and it really is quite the list), I’ve decided to go with Modest Mouse today. I find that I often forget about Modest Mouse, but than I remember and think “how could I ever forget about this, I won’t this time” but than it just happens again. I’m not sure what that is because they really are awesome and seem unforgetable. As Modest Mouse goes their CD Good News For People Who Love Bad News is my favourite CD. It has classics like Dashboard (of course), Bury Me With It (the perfect funeral song) and Bukowski. For today though, here’s the video for Dashboards. I kinda like this video, it’s a little quirky, but quirky is good.
It’s an old man video so of course I like it. It also includes cool beards and the water not to mention monsters. All my favourite things (well maybe minus the monsters). But for now I’m off to bed ’cause my mom and I are off early on a bit of a culinary adventure inlcuding the Moosewood Restaurant, perfect for a vegetarian like myself and a foody like my mom. I’ll see when I get a chance to blog, but between awesome veggie dishes and pastry over-doses I may not have much time for music.
One Way Monologue
It’s Monday once again. And a great Monday it’s lookin’ like it will be. Hopefully that means it will also be a great random playlist today. I’m feelin’ good about it. So, lets see if my predications were right. Here is July 19th’s random playlist.
1. Calendar Girls – Stars (a good start to hopefully a good playlist
2. Don’t Pass Me By – The Beatles
3. Switchman – Danny Michel (from my new favourite summer CD)
4. Hey Hey Hey! – Room Eleven
5. Song For Sarah Jane – Hawksley Workman (there’s always Hawksley Workman)
6. Two Way Monologue – Sondre Lerche
7. Glass Onion – The Beatles (wow 2 Beatles songs)
8. Always Crashing In The Same Car – Danny Michel (this is from his David Bowie covers CD, which is awesome)
9. Her Diamonds – Rob Thomas (I was never a huge fan of this song)
10. Babylon – David Gray
Okay, so that was a great one as well. It’s obviously a Danny/Beatles day, of course that’s my favourite day. Shockingly all these song kinda’ go well together, as my Grams would say “it’s a keeper”. I think out of all of those Sondre Lerche is my topic for the day (or night).
He’s my favourite musician from Norway (and other places too). He has this great sound, that I can’t even describe with words. It’s weird indie-pop meets singer-songwriter, a strange combination, but a great one. I’m afraid I only know a few songs though. I’ve been working on expanding my Sondre Lerche collection but haven’t yet. Two Way Monologue is deffientley one of my favourites. It’s a great song, and has a great video. Enjoy Sondre Lerche, and the video.
Sorry about the bad quality, it’s the only one I could get to work. It’s kinda’ gameshowey, reminds me a bit of Hawksley Workmans We Dance To Yesterday. It’s a little boring at times, but the song rocks, which makes up for the lack of interest in the video. Enjoy the playlist, and until next time, GOODNIGHT!
When Dinosaurs Roamed the Earth
So, it’s Monday, but it’s a free Monday wiht no school or other commitments. I didn’t even realize until my mom pointed out that it was random playlist day, and because she was the one who remembered she got to shuffle the playlist on her iPod. So without further ado here is my mother’s random playlist.
1. Clampdown – The Clash
2. When You Gonna Flower? – Hawksley Workman
3. Midnight Moonlight – Be Good Tanyas
4. Song For Sarah Jane – Hawksley Workman (I guess it’s a Hawksley day)
5. Rise – The Frames
6. Toledo – Danny Michel (another awesome Danny song)
7. Mrs Mcgrath – Bruce Springsteen (from my favourite Springsteen album, We Shall Overcome)
8. Virginia Avenue – Tom Waits (there’s always some Tom, and always some Hawksley)
9. Into The Flame – Danny Michel (I guess the shuffle also sensed our Danny mood lately)
10. I Go Blind – 54-40 (another classic, and one of my moms favourites)
So apparently it was a Danny/Hawksley day, and that’s always a good day. I especially love the Hawksley Workman/Be Good Tanyas segue. That was really something you’d only get in a random playlist. Overall though, my mom;s shuffle was pretty similar to mine. I’m really happy the 54-40 came up on it, because that’s a great topic for a great, but super incredibly, wicked witch of the west melting kind of day.
I know my mom has been a fan of them since, well, dinosaurs roamed the earth. But they’ve managed to stay pretty popular. We were just talking about how their music doesn’t sound very dated, well I Go Blind doesn’t anyway. That’s pretty impressive 25 years later. I can’t say I know a ton of their music, but I know a good song when I hear one, and I Go Blind is surely one of those (in a bit of a cheesy kind of way). Below is the video for the song. It’s not at all what I expected, but see for yourselves.
It was a way different take on the song than I imagined. I kind of saw a pretty girl, and a bit of a love story, but instead it was much deeper. It looked at real issues like, poverty, fires, disasters, pain and in a sad way I really liked that. I liked that they used their song for more than money, and popularity (although I’m sure they got that too). It’s not the best quality video, and not even the best video, but I really appreciated the effort to do something a little different, in my opinion anyway.
P.S. I love their matching jackets at the end.
Rain, Rain Please Stay
So, a good ol’ rainy day, where it just rains and all you want to do is curl up on the couch with a good book, some tea and the perfect music. Well this is a mood I’m often in and have made many a Rainy Day playlist, but there not all great, so here’s another try of mine. The problem with the rainy day playlist is it’s hard to know what the perfect rainy day song is. I’m sitting at my aunts house curled up on the couch awaiting the rain and couldn’t be happier. These are songs that seem pretty good to me at this exact time on this exact rainy day, let me know your perfect rain song.
1. Ticket Taker – Low Anthem (my dad introduced me to this, and I really love it, GO DAD!)
2. Passion Play – William Fitzsimmons
3. City Song – Emmy The Great
4. Low Rising – The Swell Season
5. World Spins Madly On – Weepies (my favourite morning song, or grumpy, bad mood song totally captures the mood)
6. Road Regrets – Dan Mangan
7. All The Way Down – Glen Hansard
8. Song For Your – Alexi Murdoch (pretty little song for any mood)
9. Shore to Shore – Johnny Flynn (just a perfect song)
10. Bright Future – Bowerbirds
11. Insects – Brasstronaut (a creepy title for a pretty, rainy song. Don’t get turned off by the name like I did at first)
12. Safe and Sound – Hawksley Workman (the most perfect song EVER, for anything)
13. Song For The Road – David Ford
14. Eyes Full Of Rose – Horse Feathers
15. Julie Blue – Joe Purdy
16. Weighty Ghost – Wintersleep (another fantastic song that I’ll never get sick of)
17. Beautiful – Danny Michel (because it captures the mood perfectly and who doesn’t love Danny?)
18. Blue Skies – Noah and the Whale (the title may have blue in it but it’s “a song for anyone who can’t get out of bed”, perfect)
19. Dreamer – Jenn Grant
20. Skeletons (Acoustic Version) – Yeah Yeah Yeahs (one of my favourite songs by them)
21. Drinking Games – Library Voices (saw them at Hillside, FANTASTIC)
22. In The Battle of Sun VS. Curtains, Sun Loses and We Sleep Until Noon – Woodpigeon (greatest song title ever and perfect for a rainy day)
22. Lay Me Down – The Frames
23. The Dress Looks Nice On You – Sufjan Stevens
24. Summer Day – Coconut Records (don’t let the name decieve you, it’s all about rain)
I’d say that’s pretty awesome for a rainy day, or any day for that matter. A day you need some good quiet music, which is a lot of days for me. Below is the video for Weighty Ghost, which I’ve been meaning to play for awhile so it’s perfect. This is one of my favourite video’s even though there’s nothing spectacular about it. Maybe it’s just the great song, or the sing-along chorus which I’m a HUGE sucker for. Either way, enjoy.
I hope that put you in the rainy, sleepy mood if you weren’t already.
Beginning of All
Alright I’m in such a desperate mood for a post. I’ve been on a bit of a homework hiatus, and probably will be for the rest of the month, because as you know exams are coming up soon. Which basically means all the teachers who have been taking their dear sweet time for the rest of the semester are freaking out and assigning insane amounts of homework and projects, not to mention studying, so I will try to post, but it will be tricky. Yesterday I really wanted to post, but I was writing a poetry anthology for English. I even thought I may add some of my fantastic poetry to this post, whadd’ya think? I think so. My topic was the city and the title was “A City Mosaic”. I tried to incorporate every part of the city I either liked or thought interesting. There’s a lot of music posts
Break Time (one of my finest if I do say so myself)
Office workers at Starbucks;
Wildebeests at the watering hole.
Attraction (this is about live music in the city)
Music in the dark
Sound escapes through the doorway,
Filtered through the night
The heart beats match the drum beats
The crowd is drawn together.
Don’t worry I didn’t forgot that it’s also Monday, which means (drumroll please) Random Playlist Monday!
1. Bright Young Thing – Albert Hamm0nd Jr. (I don’t really know this song)
2. Get Out Of This House – Shawn Colvin
3. The Beacon – A Fine Frenzy
4. Old Bloody Orange – Hawksley Workman (always charming names)
5. Go Your Own Way – Fleetwood Mac (a classic)
6. Destroyer – David Gray (I’ve been really into him lately)
7. Steady On – Shawn Colvin (I guess it’s a Shawn Colvin kind of night)
8. Be All, End All – David Martel (I really love this song, brings back a lot of memories)
9. Only Living Boy in New York – Simon & Garfunkel
10. Wish I Could – Norah Jones (she’s wonderful for some moods, but only some)
I really, really love this playlist. It’s one of my favourites. All the songs actually go together, there isn’t one that really stands out as odd. I’m thinking David Martel today. I’ve really only listened to the one song, but it’s a great song, although a little on the long side.
Here’s the song. It’s a little long, but you still get the effect, check out the studio version too!
Mood Music
Alright all you eyetuners, I’ve done something fantastic. For the first time since I got my music listography book, I’ve been brave enough to open it and start a playlist. Now ironically the first playlist I opened up to was Songs That Completely Transform Your Mood (A.K.A. Therapist in a Song). This is the perfect playlist for me at the moment and I’m happily filling it out. Now the book gives 22 spots to put songs (which is a strange number), but I’m not going to fill it all out right now. I’m assuming it means the songs transform a mood in a good way (I think I have more than 22 bad songs). As I’m recording the playlist I’m noticing that most of the songs are new ones. I think that may be because all my old therapy songs have bad moments associated with them (which is ironic, considering their supposed to be happy songs, associated with good things), so I’m starting fresh (well except for a few).
1. Orange Sky – Alexi Murdoch (I know very predictable)
2. Claire Fontaine – Hawksley Workman (I have both a Christmas thing and a Hawksley thing, which makes this the perfect therapy song)
3. When I Look At You – Miley Cyrus (I’m afriad I can’t explain this one, sorry. I really wish I could)
4. Road Regrets – Dan Mangan
5. One (Blake’s Got A New Face) – Vampire Weekend (as I’ve told you before, this song makes me think of someone who always makes me smile)
6. Low Rising – The Swell Season (this song just has that, ahhh, everything is okay effect)
7. Fairytale of New York – The Pogues (as you can tell, I really have a Christmas thing, this whole playlist should just be Christmas Songs. There’s something about this song I really love, although it’s not really very nice)
8. Falling Slowly – Glen Hansard & Marketa Irglova
9. Safe and Sound – Hawksley (this whole playlist could also be Hawksley)
10. San Diego Serenade – Tom Waits (my sleepy song, enough said)
11. All Is Love – Karen O and the Kids
12. Ain’t No Reason – Brett Dennen
13. Sweater Song – Hedley (once again, hard to explain)
14. The Cave – Mumford & Sons
That’s all I can think of for now. I’m going to post this playlist on my Music Listography Page, where you can find this and soon to be, other ones. Check for updates, I’ll keep adding songs as I think of them. Of course, now that I’m actually doing the playlist I can’t think of many, hopefully more come. I’m thinking that I’m going to start filling out more of the book, not that I’ve christened it. Probably expect one, every week or so.
So, I was having trouble finding a song to play because I’ve talked about most of them already, so below is Sweater Song by Hedley. When I was really little I was really in love with Hedley especially the song On My Own (I still no all the words), I even got to see them once. As a got older I decided that I actually wasn’t so crazy about them, it got to the point where I couldn’t stand it. It may be because all of a sudden my friends started to really like it as well, which made it no longer my little secret. And than one day I heard my aunt playing the Sweater Song. I didn’t even realize it was Hedley at first, but I really love it even though it’s uber cheesy, trust me I know. The week I discovered the song was during, you got it, CHRISTMAS! So it always makes me really happy. Enjoy the song, or atleast try to. I know, Miley, Hedley same playlist, YIKES. But Hawksley and Tom are there too.
I still have my autograph from Jacob Hoggard my cousin got me, although it doesn’t have the same appeal it used to, it was still my first autograph. It will be an embarrassing music thing to tell my kids, although by than Hedley will probably be non-existent.
Hey Music!
Music, Music, Music. I love it, I love it, I love it. That could be all I said today but I’ve decided that you fellow music lovers (I hope) deserve more. So, scheduled today I have Hey Rosetta! Yes, Hey Rosetta! I would really like it if you told me you already knew them because that would mean you have fantastic music taste but if not don’t worry, be happy (I always hated that song) because I have you covered. So enjoy and learn (well don’t learn because learning sucks, but embrace!)
So I guess I first discovered Hey Rosetta! last year, but it wasn’t until Hillside (yes Hillside, I know you’re going to be so sick of it soon) that I really got into it. Their live show was great, so great in fact I decided to go and buy a CD of theirs. Well in the merch tent and looking at two possibilities a guy approached me telling me to go for Into Your Lungs (And Around in Your Heart and on Through Your Blood). That was the greatest advice EVER. Although their other CD Plan Your Escape is good too well Into Your Lungs is fantastic. The guys reasoning was, one: Into Your Lungs has much better sound quality and two: the songs on Into Your Lungs are much more listenable, and three: Hawksley did a fantastic job producing it. I couldn’t agree more with all of them. I’ll give the same advice to you.
My mom and I have been listening to them non-stop ever since. Of all the songs on that CD, New Goodbye, Red Heart, and I’ve Been Asleep For A Long, Long Time are my favourites although the end of New Goodbye is rather startling, it’s just a whole bunch of oh so musical static. But my very favourite song is Old Crow Black Night Stand Still from CBC Radio 2′s Great Canadian Song Hunt. Actually that whole CD is fantastic. I especially recommend Hawksley’s, Deep Dark Woods and of course Hey Rosetta’s! But back to Hey Rosetta! Their song they did for Gros Morne is superb. I was really happy when they won, to do the song. Of course I voted for them every single day. But really that song is magic, it’s really pretty. And if you’ve ever been to Gros Morne (which I have because my uncle lives right in the heart of it, which is breath taking) you’ll appreciate the song even more. Good ol’ Newfoundland bands, they really are good.
Below is the video for Red Heart, but I highly, highly recommend you check out the rest of it, especially Old Crow Black Night Stand Still (Hey Rosetta! apparently really likes long names). It is truly amazing. Enjoy the video, it’s pretty simple. People singing, dancing, some nature thrown in there, what could be better.
Trust me I don’t just like them because Hawksley produced them (although that was the initial attraction), I like them for more than that now.
P.S. I can’t watch the video for technical reasons, so I’m hoping it’s the right one, but if not I’ll fix it tomorrow don’t be alarmed.
Sitting, Waiting, Wishing (it wasn’t Monday)
It’s Monday! YUCK! Talk about a bad day, but I’m going to drown my sorrows in music (wow that sounded good) and forget about. Instead I’m going to create the…you got it. Random Monday Playlist.
1. What Would You Say To Me Lord – Hawksley Workman
2. Imaginary Bars – Great Lake Swimmers
3. 9-5 Lives – Dancehall Free For All
4. Sweet Little Sixteen – Chuck Berry (this was for a sixteen playlist my dad made me, it’s great!)
My iPod just died and I can’t find the cord, now what? I guess the computer it is. Should be about the same.
5. Sitting, Waiting, Wishing – Jack Johnson (I have a Jack Johnson thing, even though he’s super cheesy)
6. Orange Sky – Alexi Murdoch (I love this song)
7. Colour of a Man – Hidden Cameras (can’t wait for Hillside)
8. The Letter – Macy Gray
9. White Sky – Vampire Weekend
10. Kurt Vonnegut – Born Ruffians (a great Hillside find, their awesome check it out)
I think these get better and better, and they always show me something to talk about that I’d never think of. Today I think is a Born Ruffians day. I discovered them at Hillside two years ago. They were actually not that great live, something just didn’t work although I’ve talked to some people who said they were great, maybe it was just a down day? Their CD is great though, can’t say I’ve ever heard a band like them before, although they have a bit of a Jon & Roy vibe (check them out too). Kurt Vonnegut is I think my favourite song on the CD although I like In a Mirror and Badonkadonkey too (great name). Their songs have cool lyrics and choruses too, actually listen to the song. Plus his kinda punk, rock, indie voice really makes it work. My mom and I were talking about how their actually not great but somehow it works. I mean he can’t sing and my moms always joking that she could be the drummer (a dream of hers, now that I have my bass, we could be in a band together and call it…Mother & Daughter, M&D for short). How does it work, maybe that’s why they weren’t good live? Anyways, check them out, they rock.
I think they look like every other little indie boy band. Kinda rough and rugged like they haven’t showered in a while (which they probably haven’t) but still somehow kind of clean.
P.S. this has nothing to do with the post, but I just say a picture of Eminem, and ahh, he’s scary looking.
P.P.S. Canadian music rocks, it’s official.
