Romance or Rolaid?
So, it’s Monday, and a kind of crappy one at that. But, what Monday is good, except for the ones that land on holidays and PA days? So, we’ll make the best of it with a hopefully fantasic Random Playlist Monday.
- Desert Sunrise – Brett Dennen (good start)
- Oh My God – Jasper Sloan Yip
- March into the Sea – Modest Mouse
- Good People – Jack Johnson
- Leap – The Cave Singers
- Romance Is – Lights
- Free Nelson Mandela – Special AKA (please don’t ask)
- Goodmorning Sunshine – Serena Ryder (gotta love Serena Ryder)
- Twilight Omens – Franz Ferdinand
- Rumors – Josh Ritter
Alright, so maybe not the greatest one, but Free Nelson Mandela, you don’t get much better than that. But I think Light’s is good for today, but what day is Lights not good, really? Anyways, Lights is the topic for today. I don’t have much more to say since I’ve already talked about her a thousand times. So how about I got easy on your eyes this Monday, and just sit back, relax and enjoy a pretty cute video.
Alright, so Romance Is, is one of her more obscure songs, so I’m glad I found a version of her doing it. It’s actually one of my favourites, I especially like her acoustic version on her Acoustic EP. I’m also a huge fan of her acoustic videos. I think they’re really great, almost better than her music videos because they seem more natural, and as you know I’m a huge sucker for acoustic anything. Anyways, enjoy the video, and I will talk to you later, for now it is waaaaaay past my bedtime (sad I know).
P.S. for all of you who don’t know who Lights is, go find another blog, we’re over. Kidding. But do go look her up. NOW!
Fall Back Down
Alright, so day 1 is complete. Only like 200 and something days left. And believe it or not, it didn’t suck quite as much as anticipated, even the early wake-up, but that’s enough talk about school. Let’s get down to the real knitty-gritty (I always loved that saying), the topic for today. Now I must warn you, today is a bit of a weird one. It’s all about covers. And this cover story (haha) is a really fantastic one. I recently bought Lights Acoustic EP and completely fell in love with her song Fall Back Down, and than realized it was a cover. Now a few days ago I decided to look up the original and came across quite a find. Now for those of you who don’t know Fall Back Down is a Rancid song. So I’ve decided to post both videos and you can see quite the transformation Lights did with the original. Punk to sweet light pop, who knew.
First here’s Lights version. It’s pretty adorable, and makes you fall in love with her all over again.
Now after that nice little song, here’s a bit of a change-up, or a punk-up if you will.
I must say I laughed pretty hard over it. I guess I’m not a punk girl (but we already knew that). I do appreciate the lyrics though, and it does seem like a good first day of school song.
Happy Lights
So, I know I’ve already talked about Lights but I came across this video and really fell in love with it. This song is probably one of my favourite Joni Mitchell songs of all time. It really brings back memories of my old house which I really loved. Lights version defiantly does it justice. As you can tell I’m a sucker for acoustic.
Anyways I know it might be a bore because I’ve already talked about Lights and no offense Joni Mitchell but you may not be the most exciting artist ever, but both are great in their own way. I grew up on Joni Mitchell so this song really is special for me. Recently I had too leave my old house which was really unique. It was off-grid and strawbale (I know talk about weird that’s what everyone thinks. In school I think I was talked about in the staff room ALOT. You know that quiet little girl that lives in the weird house). Anyways, the house was pretty special and anything that reminds me of my childhood or the house makes me super happy and sad at the same moment. This song does both. I think Lights does a fantastic job of it. She captures the “thing” (once again with the “thing”) of the song and still keeps her own Lights vibe. I really love Lights acoustic stuff and this song defiantly showcases her talent. This song is for anyone whose had to leave a special place or someone. Hopefully it reminds you of something pretty awesome (I know this is a cheesy post, but whatever). I promise this will be the last time I talk about Lights for quite some time. Pretend it’s about Joni Mitchell instead. This song actually makes me shiver (not quite the right word but you know what I mean) when I listen to it because it so powerfully reminds me of home. This song may not quite have the same effect on you but I’m sure that you (whoever you are) have a song like that. For a long time I couldn’t listen to music like this at all. Joni Mitchell, Sarah Harmer, Lucinda Williams, Rickie Lee Jones all of them, but slowly I’m beginning to be able to. That makes me really happy. And I hope the song makes you as happy.
Another great thing about this video is how down-to-earth Lights seems to be. Less makeup, no people surrounding her, just the song. It’s perfect! In my opinion that’s kind of what the song reminds me of. Just being you no matter what and taking your time in life (again cheesy, I’m not usually this cheesy but who really cares). Let me know about you special songs!
Bright Lights
So, I started this post that included a swearing playlist, but I was having a total brain freeze and couldn’t think of any songs (good ones) so I deleted the whole thing (okay I just deleted another post, I’m having a bad post day. Lets try one more time).
I was really stumped on what to talk about today and then it came to me. LIGHTS. Perfect, but then what about Lights and then I remembered this awesome video I found quite a while back just before I went to see her in Ottawa in November (the show was awesome, except for the fact that the fire alarm went off and we had to leave early, BUMMER). Anyways, I’m a fan of her on facebook and this video came up. I really love Lights, everything about her is pretty awesome from her look to her music. My favourites of hers are Saviour from both her CD’s. February Air and Drive My Soul from her self titled EP Lights. I was never a fan of her song Ice until I saw the ska video, then I had a new appreciation for the song. It’s a cool video, it doesn’t seem “put-on” it seems natural. I especially like the awkward person sitting beside her the whole time. A lot of her music videos are great. Click here for the link to her YouTube channel. I think her music video for Saviour is a lot like Owl Cities Fireflies (although I think Lights came first, so other way around). Actually Lights and Owl City have a lot of similarities, one of them being there both awesome. Anyway’s check out her other videos and watch the attached one. I think it’s really cool. I love her ska version, even though it’s not really ska more acoustic. Either way it’s great.
